Colantonio was born in Naplesin about 1420. He trained Antonello da Messina and was the first representative of Flemish painting in Italy.
His first works, which include St Jerome in his study, clearly show his Flemish-Burgundy training, even if the style was filtered by Spanish painters. This can be seen in another painting, Consegna della Regola (Capodimonte Museum, Naples). The artist was an important figure in the cultural world of Naples, where, at the time, humanistic trends were the dominant trends. Naples was open to innovation from Burgundy, the Flanders and Spain.
