Lorenzo Costa was born in Ferrara in 1460 and worked mainly in Bologna, where he was influenced by the art of Antonello da Messina. He acquired a personal painting style, static and solemn but with marked chromatism. A famous painting by this artist is Madonna and Saints in the church of St Petronius in Bologna.
After 1500 Costa’s art was influenced by Perugino and Filippino Lippi. This can be seen in the paintings executed in Ferrara for Isabella d'Este.
